The Amazing Story of Fatima

Three Shepherd Children

Long ago in 1917, in a small town in Portugal called Fatima, three children were taking care of their sheep. Their names were Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. They were cousins and best friends who played together every day.

One day, something amazing happened! A beautiful Lady dressed in white and shining brighter than the sun appeared to them. She was so kind and loving that the children weren't afraid at all.

Who Was the Beautiful Lady?

The beautiful Lady was Mary, the Mother of Jesus! She came from Heaven with a very special message. She appeared to the children six times, on the 13th day of each month from May to October.

Mary told the children she was "Our Lady of the Rosary" and asked them to pray the Rosary every day. She also taught them special prayers and asked them to make little sacrifices to help save souls from going to Hell.

The Miracle of the Sun

On October 13, 1917, Our Lady promised to perform a miracle so everyone would believe. More than 70,000 people came to see what would happen!

And then it happened! The sun began to spin and dance in the sky! It had all different colors like a rainbow. Then it looked like it was falling toward the earth! Everyone was scared, but then the sun went back to normal. The people who had been soaking wet from rain were suddenly completely dry!

This miracle proved that Our Lady's messages were real and true.

What Our Lady Wants You to Know

Three Simple Things

Our Lady gave a simple message that even young children can follow. Here are the three most important things she wants us to do:

1

Pray the Rosary Every Day

The Rosary is like a beautiful bouquet of roses we give to Mary. Each Hail Mary is like a rose! Our Lady asked us to pray the Rosary every day. Even if you can only pray one decade (that's 10 Hail Marys), that's wonderful!

2

Make Small Sacrifices

A sacrifice means giving up something you want for love of Jesus and Mary. It's like giving them a present! You can share your toys, be kind when someone is mean to you, or give up dessert. These little gifts help save souls!

3

Love Jesus and Mary Very Much

The most important thing is to love Jesus and Mary with all your heart. Talk to them during the day, thank them for all the good things you have, and ask them to help you be good.

Special Prayers Our Lady Taught

The Fatima Prayer

Our Lady taught the children this prayer to say after each decade of the Rosary:

"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy."

This prayer is easy to memorize! Try saying it slowly and thinking about what the words mean.

The Angel's Prayer

Before Our Lady came, an angel taught the children this beautiful prayer:

"O Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners."

This prayer is longer, but it's very powerful! The angel fell down on the ground when he prayed it because he loved God so much.

The Sacrifice Prayer

When you make a sacrifice, you can say this short prayer:

"O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

Say this prayer whenever you do something hard or give up something you want. It makes your sacrifice even more special!

Fun Ways to Live Our Lady's Message

Make a Sacrifice Jar

Get a jar and some colorful beads or buttons. Every time you make a sacrifice, put one in the jar. Watch it fill up! At the end of the week, count them and tell Jesus and Mary about all the sacrifices you made for them.

Pray a Family Rosary

Ask your mom and dad if your family can pray the Rosary together. You can take turns leading the prayers. Our Lady said "The family that prays together stays together!" You can even pray while riding in the car.

Draw Pictures for Mary

Draw pictures of Our Lady, the three children, or the miracle of the sun. You can color them and put them in your room or give them to Mary by putting them near a statue or picture of her. She loves when you make things for her!

Be Extra Kind

The Fatima children were always kind and helpful. You can be like them! Help your brothers and sisters, share your toys, say kind words, and smile at people. When you're kind, you're showing Jesus' love to others.

Visit Jesus in Church

Francisco loved to visit Jesus in the tabernacle. He would sit quietly in church and keep Jesus company. Ask your parents if you can visit Jesus in church sometimes. Just sit quietly and tell Him you love Him. He loves when you visit!

Wear a Brown Scapular

The Brown Scapular is like a hug from Mary that you can wear all day! It's two small pieces of brown cloth connected by strings that you wear around your neck. Our Lady showed the children the Scapular and said it's very important. Ask your parents about getting one blessed for you.

Easy Sacrifices You Can Make

Here are some simple sacrifices that children can offer to Jesus and Mary. Remember, even small things become big when you do them with love!

At Home:

  • • Make your bed without being asked
  • • Help with chores cheerfully
  • • Share your favorite toy
  • • Let your sibling pick the TV show
  • • Say "please" and "thank you"
  • • Obey the first time you're asked

With Food:

  • • Give up dessert once in a while
  • • Eat vegetables without complaining
  • • Don't ask for snacks between meals
  • • Let someone else have the last cookie
  • • Thank God before every meal

At School:

  • • Be kind to someone who's alone
  • • Do your homework without complaining
  • • Don't gossip or say mean things
  • • Help someone who needs it
  • • Pay attention in class

Other Ideas:

  • • Turn off the TV to pray
  • • Give up video games for a day
  • • Be patient when waiting
  • • Don't complain when things are hard
  • • Smile even when you don't feel like it

Remember: Jacinta said, "Sacrifices are like flowers we throw at the feet of Our Lord to console Him." Every little sacrifice you make is like giving Jesus and Mary a beautiful flower! They are so happy when you make sacrifices for them.

Questions Kids Ask About Fatima

Why did Our Lady appear to children?

Our Lady chose children because children have pure hearts and they believe easily. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me." Our Lady knew that children would trust her and do what she asked. She chose children to show that anyone can be close to God—you don't have to be grown up or important!

Can Our Lady appear to me too?

Our Lady can appear to anyone she wants! But most of the time, she speaks to us through the Bible, through prayer, and through our hearts. If you pray and listen carefully, you will hear what Mary wants to tell you. She's always watching over you and guiding you, even if you can't see her.

Why does Our Lady want us to pray the Rosary?

The Rosary is Mary's favorite prayer because it helps us think about Jesus' life. When we pray the Rosary, we remember all the important things Jesus did to save us. Mary wants us to know her Son better, and the Rosary helps us do that. Plus, the Rosary is very powerful—it can bring peace to the world and save many souls!

What's Heaven like?

When Our Lady opened her hands, the children saw beautiful light streaming from them into Heaven. They said Heaven is more beautiful than anything on earth—full of light, love, and happiness. In Heaven, we'll be with Jesus, Mary, all the angels and saints, and everyone we love. There's no sadness, no pain, and no crying—only perfect joy forever! Our Lady wants all of us to go to Heaven, and that's why she came to Fatima.

Is it hard to be holy like the Fatima children?

The Fatima children were regular kids just like you! They played, laughed, and had fun. Being holy doesn't mean being perfect or never making mistakes. It means trying your best to love Jesus and Mary, praying every day, and being kind to others. When you make a mistake, just say sorry to Jesus and try again. He loves you no matter what!
